Privacy Policy
The short version
- We collect only what the game needs: your email, password, username, picks, and the settings you choose.
- Other players see your username, profile picture and results, and your picks only once each game starts. Never your email.
- No ads, no advertising or tracking cookies, and we never sell or rent your information.
- You can delete your account, and everything tied to it, yourself, at any time.
What we collect
- Your account: your email address and password (stored scrambled, so nobody, including us, can read it) and the username you choose.
- Your picks: each result and goals prediction you make, with the team sheet and game it belongs to and when you last changed it.
- Your profile picture, if you choose one: either a team sweater with a number, or a photo you upload. Photos are cropped and shrunk on your device before they’re uploaded.
- Your settings: the Look you pick (Auto, Home sweater or Road sweater), so it follows you to other devices.
- Who invited you, if you joined from a friend’s invitation link (see Sharing and invitations below).
- Breakaway scores, if you play the Intermission game while signed in: your best score this season and how many games you’ve played. Your best score and username appear on the Breakaway leaderboard.
- Puck-drop reminders, if you turn them on: an address your browser gives us for sending notifications to that device, and a note of which games we’ve already reminded you about, so you only get one reminder per game.
We use this to run the game: to sign you in, save your picks, score them, show the leaderboards, profiles and badges, and send the emails and reminders you asked for. Emails are only for your account: confirming it, resetting your password, and confirming a new email address. We don’t send newsletters or marketing.
What other players can see
- Your username, profile picture (including an uploaded photo), the date you joined, and your points, ranks, sheets and badges, on the leaderboards and your public profile.
- Your picks, but only for games that have started. Picks for upcoming games stay hidden until puck drop; the database itself enforces this.
- Your email address is never shown to anyone, and your settings and reminders are private.
What stays on your device
stickpicks saves a few things in your browser’s own storage, which never leaves your device unless noted: picks you make while signed out (until you sign in), your Look, the last sheet you opened, your “Since your last visit” recap, which badges you’ve already been shown, your Breakaway high score, and whether you dismissed the “Get the app” bar. It also keeps a copy of the site so it opens fast and works offline. Sign-in keeps you signed in on that device until you sign out. None of this is used for advertising, and you can remove it any time by clearing this site’s data in your browser settings.
Visitor stats
We count visits with GoatCounter, a privacy-friendly counter that uses no cookies and stores no personal information. It records which page was visited (without usernames), the browser and screen size, the country, and the site you came from, and it tells us when someone uses a Share or Invite button, without saying who. We use these totals to see which parts of stickpicks people use.
Sharing and invitations
When you tap a Share or Invite button, your device makes the picture and message, and your phone’s or computer’s share sheet sends it wherever you choose. We don’t see who you send it to. Invitation links include your username, so the person you invite sees who invited them. If they create an account from your link, we note that you invited them, so you earn the Recruiter badge. That note is private: other players only see your badge, never who you invited.
Services that help run stickpicks
We don’t run our own servers; these services do the work, and each has its own privacy policy:
- Supabase: accounts, sign-in, the database (picks, usernames, settings) and profile photo storage, and the account emails.
- GitHub Pages: hosts the website. Like any web host, it may keep standard server logs, including your IP address.
- Google Fonts and jsDelivr: deliver the site’s typefaces and a code library, so your browser contacts them, and they see your IP address.
- GoatCounter: the visitor stats described above.
- Your browser’s notification service (from Google, Apple or Mozilla, depending on your browser): delivers puck-drop reminders if you turn them on.
Schedules and scores come from the NHL’s public data feed and headlines from ESPN; those are fetched by our own update job, not by your browser. Headline links take you to ESPN, which has its own policy.
Keeping and deleting your information
- We keep your account information for as long as you have an account.
- Delete account (in Settings on your profile) permanently removes your sign-in, username, picks, settings, profile photo and reminder sign-ups. It can’t be undone.
- You can change your username, password, email and picture, and turn reminders off, in Settings at any time.
- Signing out turns off reminders for that device.
Children
stickpicks is not meant for children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect information from them. If you think a child under 13 has an account, contact us and we’ll delete it.
Where your information is stored
Our service providers may store and process information in the United States and other countries. We protect it with secure (HTTPS) connections and database rules that let each player read and change only their own private information.
Your choices and rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to see, correct, download or delete your information. You can do most of this yourself in Settings on your profile; for anything else, contact us. We don’t sell or share your information for advertising, and we don’t use it to make automated decisions about you.
Terms of Use
By using stickpicks, you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the site.
A free fan game
- stickpicks is a free, fan-made prediction game. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the National Hockey League, any NHL team, the NHL Players’ Association, or ESPN.
- Team names are used only to say which team a sheet is for. All team names and trademarks belong to their owners. stickpicks uses no team logos, and its team colors are approximations.
- There is no entry fee and no prizes. Points, ranks and badges are just for fun and have no cash value. stickpicks is not a betting service, and nothing on it is betting advice.
Your account
- You need to be at least 13 to create an account. Use a real email address you can check, and keep your password private. You’re responsible for what happens on your account.
- One person per account. You may run as many team sheets as you like.
- Usernames and profile pictures are public, so keep them friendly. Don’t impersonate someone else, and don’t use anything offensive, hateful, sexual, or that you don’t have the right to use. We may change or remove a username or picture that breaks these rules.
Play fair
- Don’t use bots or scripts to make picks, run fake accounts to boost a leaderboard, or try to see other players’ hidden picks.
- Don’t try to break, overload or get around the site’s security, or interfere with other players.
- If you find a bug, especially one that affects scoring or privacy, please tell us instead of using it.
Scores and data
Schedules, scores and headlines come from public sources that we don’t control, so they may sometimes be late, missing or wrong. If a score is corrected, points and ranks may change. Picks lock at puck drop as described in the Rules, and the leaderboard’s results are final.
Your photo and username
You keep the rights to any photo you upload. By uploading it, you confirm you have the right to use it, and you let stickpicks store it and show it next to your username on the site. You can replace or remove it at any time.
The service
- stickpicks is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind. We do our best to keep it running and accurate, but we can’t promise it will always be available, error-free or secure.
- We may change, pause or end any part of stickpicks, including features, leaderboards and seasons, at any time.
- To the fullest extent the law allows, stickpicks and the people who run it aren’t liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or for any loss of data, arising from your use of the site.
Ending your use
You can stop playing and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or remove an account that breaks these terms.
Changes
We may update this page from time to time; the date at the top shows the latest version. If a change is important, we’ll mention it on the home page. Continuing to use stickpicks after a change means you accept it.
Contact
Questions, a privacy request, or a problem to report? Open a request on stickpicks’ GitHub page. Please don’t include your email address or other personal details there, as requests are public; just describe what you need and we’ll reply.
